For more than 10 years, CIMVHR has worked with academic scholars, members of the military, Veterans, clinicians and practitioners, and government, industry and philanthropic partners in an effort to advance military, Veteran and family health and well-being research in Canada. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, CIMVHR found safe ways to gather, and to discuss and disseminate emerging research.

In October 2020, CIMVHR hosted a weekly Virtual Symposium Series, with each meeting focused on a different area of research. Through a consultation process, key areas of emerging research were identified and selected key areas of emerging research for military personnel, Veterans and their families. Each symposium featured expert presenters and an opportunity for participants to engage and ask questions. CIMVHR co-hosted the following symposiums with partner institutes who are leaders in advancing the topics of focus.

This symposium highlighted the significant benefits of integrating a sex and gender lens into all research, including health research about serving military, Veterans and their families. Gender-blind or gender-neutral research and policy can have unintended negative social and health-related consequences, leading to unbalanced outcomes and potential harm. Canada has emerged as a leader of a concerted international effort to integrate a sex and gender lens into all defence-related research and policy.
