Supplement spotlight — issue 6.s2

Addressing the needs of military members, Veterans and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic

JMVFH quickly adapted to the needs of readers, authors, and stakeholders in the spring of 2020 by initiating the development of a supplement dedicated to researching the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on military members, Veterans and their families. In an unprecedented act, articles under peer review for this issue were made available on the JMVFH website. This rare opportunity allowed for the provision of timely information about the pandemic from leading experts in the military, Veteran and family health community. A total of 23 submissions were received, with 19 accepted for publication. Three of these articles were among the top-10 most accessed of 2020.

Impact of COVID-19 on mental health care for Veterans: Improvise, adapt, and overcome

Appearing in JMVFH special issue 6.s2, Addressing the needs of military members, Veterans and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic, the article, “Impact of COVID-19 on mental health care for Veterans: Improvise, adapt and overcome,” by international authors Mcfarlane et al., was the top downloaded JMVFH article during the reporting period with 2,987 downloads. The article was among the first to discuss how health care for Veterans might be organized during the pandemic, and to offer suggestions on how supports could be improvised and adapted to fit the needs of this population during a worldwide crisis.
